Don Punchatz

synopsis

Don Punchatz’s career spread from the 1960s to the early 2000s, with his best and most well-known work occurring through the 1970s and 80s. This small, handsome book of 240 pages includes a generous selection of Don’s art, along with a thorough gallery of his book and magazine covers (we couldn’t find every original, after all) and some very rare works. Some are even shown with detail views.
The book also features a new introduction by Don’s son, Gregor Punchatz, and is signed by him as well. Two of Don’s colleagues have written touching and heart-felt tributes to Don and his work and the SketchPad Studios that served an illustration house and training ground for young artists. Once you read about how awesome a person Don was to be around, you’ll wish you were there.
The book is fully cloth bound, with silver stamping on the front board and spine, and a paste-down image on the front. The book has a gorgeous full color dustjacket showing some of Don’s highlights (the dustjacket is pictured below), and there are printed endpapers, too.
Don Punchatz was always about the work: professional, elegant, often humorous, and always excellent. He was not about self-promotion and awards; therefore, he is not as well-known today as he should be. This volume, generously priced and limited to just 300 copies, is a sound investment. You won’t be disappointed in this book.
